Battery Impedance Estimation

Electrical equivalent circuit models (EECM) model of a battery is useful to estimate the state of charge and state of power based on voltage and current measurements. However, the EECM parameters change due to temperature, age, and usage patterns of the battery. Accurate estimation of EECM parameters is crucial for effective BMS development.

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS)

EIS is a frequency domain approach to ECM parameter estimation and is robust and very accurate. We develop approaches to improve the performance of EIS approaches to battery impedance estimation. Online implementation of EIS method is also being looked at.

Battery Thermal Modelling

Thermal-electrical equivalent circuit (TECM) models are useful to predict the core temperature and the surface temperature of a battery for a given current profile. Knowledge of the TECM model parameters are crucial for the success of a battery thermal management system. We develop optimal and online approaches to identify TECM model parameters.

Battery Thermal Management

The performance of a Li-ion battery is affected due to temperature variations. Battery thermal management system (BTMS) assures safe, efficient, and reliable operation of a Li-ion battery pack by maintaining the battery always within the acceptable temperature range. Our present work is focused on accurate temperature prediction at the surface of the battery.
